Affected versions

  • latest Nightly 89.0a1
  • Beta 88.0b5
  • Release 87.0

Affected platforms

  • Windows 10 Touchscreen

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch Firefox.
  2. Go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page.
  3. Hold with your finger on any link (the issue is more visible on selecting links that have more than one word) from the page until the FF context menu appears.

Expected result

  • The entire link is selected and correctly displayed in the context menu.

Actual result

  • FF doesn’t select the entire link, for example (as seen in the screenshot), only the “produce” world appears in the context menu, while the “produce new species?” link was initially selected.

  • Suggested Severity

  • S3, since this seems to be broken on other releases as well.

Regression range

  • Not a recent regression since the issue is not repo on Release 87.0 and 86.0.1. I’ll investigate more on this matter, in case of an old regression.

Additional notes

  • please see the attached screenshot.
Has Regression Range: --- → no
Has STR: --- → yes

Definitely not a GTK issue. Ting-Yu, what is the right component for this? I assume it's related to AccessibleCaret in a way but...

Component: Widget: Gtk → Layout
Flags: needinfo?(aethanyc)

This is not about the text selection, but whether the text in the link is correctly used in the context menu.

My steps to reproduce by using Firefox Nightly (2021-04-01)

  1. Go to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox
  2. Open "Responsive Design Mode" and enable touch simulation.
  3. Locate the first sentence "Firefox Browser, also known as Mozilla Firefox or simply Firefox, is a free and open-source[22] web browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation and its subsidiary". Notice "web browser" is a link to another article.
  4. Long press on "browser" of the "web browser" link in step 3.

I believe the expected result is:
The context menu should have an item Search Google for "web browser".

But I cannot produce this issue because from the comment 0, I believe Ciprian was seeing a unexpected result like Search Google for "browser".

Severity: S3 → --
Component: Layout → Menus
Flags: needinfo?(aethanyc)
Product: Core → Firefox

Well, right, but the "Search google from" comes from the selection text, not the link text.

Well, right, but the "Search google from" comes from the selection text, not the link text.

I don't know the detail, but the selection highlight covers only "browser". Attached a screenshot of what I saw.

Severity: -- → S3
Priority: -- → P3
QA Whiteboard: [qa-regression-triage]

This does not seem to be a regression, since I was able to reproduce the bahavior all the way back to Firefox 47.0.2.
