Details

Affected versions

  • Firefox 83.0b9 (only sometimes)
  • Firefox 84.0

Affected platforms

  • Windows 10
  • macOS 10.15.7
  • Ubuntu 20.04

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch Firefox
  2. Access about:preferences - Home
  3. Deactivate Web Search

Expected result

  • Only the search toolbar in about:newtab is hidden

Actual result

  • The Firefox brand is hidden as well

Regression range

  • Tried searching for a regression, I was able to have the Firefox sign appear on 83.0b9 a couple of times, and it was still reproducible. Below 83.0b9, I wasn't able to make the sign appear on about:newtab.

Additional notes

  • The issue can be seen in the following attachment
  • 85.0a1 is not affected as it won't have the Firefox brand on about:newtab

Suggested severity

  • S3

QA Whiteboard: [qa-regression-triage]

Considering the fact that this issue can't be reproduce on Nightly, this is the only regression range I could find.

Has Regression Range: no → yes

I don't think this is a regression.

Previously the brand logo would only show up if search was the only item enabled. So it has always been coupled to the search logo.

I think it's an interesting improvement though, and worth considering.

Removing the regression wanted keyword per comment 1 and 2. The logo is still going along with the searchbar if deactivated on latest builds (Firefox 108.0b5 and Firefox 109.0a1).
