Affected versions

  • 75.0, 76.0b4, 77.0a1(2020-03-13);

Affected platforms

  • macOS 10.15.3, Ubuntu 18.04;

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch Firefox, access about:preferences#general
  2. Scroll down to Language and Appearance;
  3. Click on the Color button;
  4. Click on any color change button;
  5. Click behind the color picker frame to close that modal(not the color picker);

Expected result

  • nothing happens;

Actual result

  • color picker window is ignored and remains in view;

Regression range

  • First bad: (2018-10-05)
  • Last good: (2018-10-04)
  • Pushlog: URL;

Additional notes

  • attached recording with the issue;
  • issue does not reproduce on Windows 10.

Looks to be a regression from bug 1416363. Also, see bug 980996 for an issue specific to macOS. Is this expected platform behavior for color pickers to remain open after the program has been closed on Ubuntu? Can you test with another program?

Looking at the provided information, you are right.

  • bug 1416363 - seems like the likely candidate;
  • bug 980996 does provide good information as to what's going on with macOS;
  • as far as Ubuntu goes, did not manage to find any software that leaves an empty color picker up; a
    search over potential issues revealed no reports in the wild on the mentioned OS, so inclined to claim it should behave the same as on Windows (and close up); Tried with text editor(s) and other setting pickers; as per the issues on macOS but they're not lingering and are closed in an expected order.

Setting priority as P3 since this regression has been around since 2018 and potentially longer since the picker is exposed to the web. It looks like the path forward is fixing bug 1630634.

Priority: -- → P3
