Attached video Print Dialog Freeze.mp4

Affected versions

  • Firefox 60.9.0esr
  • Firefox 68.1.0esr
  • Firefox 70.0b11
  • Firefox 71.0a1

Affected platforms

  • Ubuntu 16.04 (x64)

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Access this PDF
  3. Click on the printer button in the upper right part of the in-browser pdf.

Expected result
The print dialog does not freeze.

Actual result
The print dialog and firefox will freeze.

Regression range
I don't know if this is a regression, as it reproduces back to 60.9.0esr. Will see for it asap.

Additional notes

  • The actual issue can be seen in the attachment.
  • This was not reproducible on Windows 10 (x64) and macOS 10.13.
Has Regression Range: --- → no
Has STR: --- → yes

I can't reproduce (using Ubuntu 19.10).

Questions:
(1) Are print dialogs in other programs affected? (programs like gedit)
(2) If not: is normal "File|Print" affected (Ctrl+P) for basic web pages like http://example.org? (It would surprise me for this to be a PDF-specific thing)
(3) Do you have a network printer configured? (OS-level issues with network printer connectivity can sometimes cause problems with the print dialog -- though usually not in a Firefox-specific way)

It'd also be interesting to know if more recent Ubuntu versions are affected... Note that version 18.04 is the most current Ubuntu LTS release

Hi Daniel, other programs doesn't seem to be affected, only Firefox will freeze when opening the Printing dialog.
Ubuntu 18.04 doesn't seem to be affected.
Tried on 16.04 with http://example.org and the issue is still present.
Yes, there is a network printer configured.

Further investigation reveals that this "freeze" is a "not responding" state and it will load after ~30 seconds.

The priority flag is not set for this bug.
:heycam, could you have a look please?

Bugbug thinks this bug is a regression, but please revert this change in case of error.

Keywords: regression

Not a new regression, too late for a fix in 70.
Daniel does the info in comment 2 help at all?

(In reply to Liz Henry (:lizzard) from comment #5)

Daniel does the info in comment 2 help at all?

It helps a bit in classifying the bug and determining how many users are affected. (Hopefully not too many, given that only a ~3-years-old version of Ubuntu seems to be affected; could conceivably be an interaction with some system-level thing which has since been fixed. Having said that, it's an Ubuntu LTS so some small chunk of users may be using it for a while still.)

catalin, would you mind seeing if you can find a regression range (if this is a regression)?

Flags: needinfo?(dholbert) → needinfo?(catalin.sasca)

Also: when the bug happens, do you know how long the freeze lasts? (e.g. if you give it ~5 minutes, does it eventually resolve itself, or does it hang longer than that?)

Priority: -- → P3

Hello all, we tried reproducing the issue in order to respond to the questions, but it seems that it is no longer reproducible on other machines with Ubuntu 16.04. Unfortunately on the machine where the issue was reproducible and screencasted, the OS failed and cannot boot anymore. Eventually we'll retry after a clean Ubuntu will be installed on it.

On the meantime, it is safe to close the issue. Will re-open it if the issue will still be reproducible on that machine, as then it will seem to be a hardware specific issue. Thanks and sorry for the late response.
