Affected versions
- Firefox 67.0b8 (20190404130536)
- Firefox 65.0 (20190124174741)
- Firefox 68.0a1 (20190405095028)
- Firefox 66.0.2 (20190326175229)
Affected platforms
- macOS 10.14
- Windows 10 x64
- Ubuntu 18.04 x64
Steps to reproduce
- Open Firefox and go to https://www.dailymotion.com/.
- Middle click on a random video under the pick of the day videos.
Expected result
- The selected video opens in a new tab and no sound is played.
Actual result
- The sound is played for the focused video from the top of the homepage.
Regression range
- This is not a recent regression as I can reproduce on 55.0a1 (20170505030252) as well. I will investigate further in case of an old regression.
Additional Notes
- The issue is not reproducible by right-clicking the video and selecting “Open Link in New Tab” context menu option.

Tested this with 3 different ways of opening the new tab: CTRL + left click, right click and open in new tab, middle click.
- In Firefox, Edge, and Chrome CTRL + left click behaves per the unexpected case of the bug.
- In Firefox, Edge, and Chrome right click and open in new tab behaves per the expected case.
- In Firefox middle click behaves like CTRL + left click.
- In Edge and Chrome middle click behaves like right click and open in new tab.
My guess is that daily motion has a click handler somewhere that is setting video.muted = false
, and that it misbehaves when opening videos via CTRL clicking (or middle clicking in the Firefox case).
Based on the above, I think most of this is a site issue. I'm going to move this to web compat regarding the different middle click behaviour (since Firefox differs here). Is our middle click behaviour being different with links a known thing? Is it a concern?

Mode: going through the pile of old issues.
hmm I'm trying to reproduce this with the keyboard (instead of the mouse) and I can't reproduce. Probably the site has changed since.
Oana could you confirm?

Karl, I can't reproduce the issue on my side (ctrl+left click/middle mouse click/ctrl+right click>open new tab). The video is opened in a new tab without sound.
