Affected versions

  • Firefox 65.0.1
  • Firefox 66.0b6
  • Nightly 67.0a1

Affected platforms

  • Windows 10 x64
  • Windows 7 x32
  • Ubuntu 18.04 x64
  • macOS 10.13

Steps to reproduce

  1. Go to https://play.hbogo.com/ and log in with a valid account.
  2. Play one of the videos.
  3. Observe behaviour.

Expected result

  • The video is loaded and works fine.

Actual result

  • The video works but it seems to be in a constant state of loading.

Regression range

  • I don't think this is a regression. Even though this just happened to me a few days ago, I can seem to find a build on which this issue is not reproducing. I tried builds from last year (2018-09-02) and I could still reproduce the issue.

Additional notes

  • The video doesn't stop.
  • Even if the video is put on pause, the dots still appear after the video is resumed.
  • In DevTools - Inspector, you can see that the classes used on the divs containing the loading dots (assets/images/loading/loading_dot.png) are changing while the video is playing,
*This issue is not happening on Chrome.
Whiteboard: [needsdiagnosis]

I can reproduce this with our test credentials. On a hunch, I believe it's displaying the loading dots when it's doing a new range request for the next mp4 segment of the stream. If I pause the video, the loading dots stop.

Nils, given this hunch, is there someone who can dig in to see if we're doing something wrong, or if HBO is making some incorrect assumptions?

(if anyone needs access to the Mozilla HBO GO test credentials, please reach out to me privately)

Although we haven't diagnosed the issue yet, HBO Go is a priority website, I've reached out to our contacts at HBO proactively.

About a month ago I complained to HBO that for the last year(!) Firefox audio segments repeating 3-4 times (about 5sec clips)
as the video moved forward. This did not happen on Safari or Chrome. HBO did something on their end to stop the
repeating audio/weird audio/video sync.

While the folks on the bug team work on the "dot" problem, they might also ask HBO what they did to make the sound/video
sync work better on Firefox.. But note: If yo carefully watch Firefox, lip sync is still lagging (but acceptable) when used on
direct wire audio, BUT when using Blue Tooth speakers, the audio (lip-sync) lags noticeably behind the video. (Lip sync works
perfectly over Bluetooth on Safari and Chrom.)

HBO has created the appropriate tickets internally to review this issue.

See bug 1547409. Moving webcompat whiteboard tags to keywords.

  1. This issue can not be reproduced in the original affected Nightly v67.0a1 with Romanian HBO GO, https://hbogo.ro, because the media is not displayed at all: "Error. Playback error occurred, please try again." and noir does it reproduce on the latest version of Nightly v89.0a1.
  2. Furthermore, it cannot be reproduced on the American HBO NOW, https://play.hbonow.com, on either of the originally affected build or the latest Nightly.
  3. The original test domain, https://play.hbogo.com, does not exist anymore; it redirects to https://www.hbo.com/ways-to-get.
  4. HBO MAX cannot be tested because we don't have a valid test account.

Based on all the above and considering that this behavior may reappear in the future, I will close this issue as Resolved - INACTIVE.
