Details

Some time ago the per-office VPN gateways that allowed you to access
the office network from the comfort of your home was shut down in
favour of a single VPN gateway located in the data centre in Santa
Clara [1].

The Santa Clara gateway is probably mostly fine to use if you live
in North America and you’re accessing a machine on the west coast.
It is also possible to use it from London to gain access to the
office network, but because it is routed via Santa Clara you end
up putting two lengths of the internet between your local machine
and the remote machine you’re trying to reach. The latency makes
it unsuitable to use for accessing any remote not located in North
America.

The reason we want per-office VPN gateways reinstated is primarily
so that developers that compile mozilla-central a lot can make use
of the office icecream cluster [2], which significantly speeds up
the compilation of Firefox.

Some of us also like to use our local laptop as a terminal for
remotely working on a more powerful workstation hooked into the
icecc cluster. This keeps the laptop cool and lets you access
systems with different characteristics than your own.

This disincentivise employees that compile a lot of code from working
from home because you end up being less productive that you would
be in the office. It is sometimes nice to have the opportunity to
stay in the comfort of your home when it is pouring down outside.

I’m filing this on behalf of the London office, who would like the
Infrastructure & Ops to reconsider and enable a VPN gateway into
the office.
