I've got this super annoying Fan spinning issue.
The fan starts spinning noisily and slow and repeats the process.
From what i could read its been going on for a long time but I'm not sure if its the same
Its caused due to mouse Polling or so.
Funny thing is i don't seem to have noticed it in the stable Ubuntu distro shipped Firefox(49.0.2)

I had not closed the browser for around a days time so the effect is more pronounced
Easily triggered while scrolling YouTube homepage

This sounds a lot like bug 508427.

Yes, while trying to find a solution i was ending up with similar Polling issues related bug
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1019796

Didn't know which is the correct issue.
Its still a mystery why the fan has to constantly turn on and off.
I've got a dual gpu fwiw: Intel + Nvidia
But the problem also occurs with Nvidia completely disabled
I think I've got better data to help investigate. It was frustrating even to collect data with the browser locking up frequently during data collection
As this issue continues to happen its leading to more & more e10s spinners
Locking up the brower and Ubuntu OS - the whole screen goes to that fade to black mode.

about:memory
http://www.mediafire.com/file/2xhd3lqvn33l134/memory-report3.json.gz
Seems like this gets easily triggered after a about a day of browsing and letting the system hibernate/standby(close lid of laptop) while leaving Firefox running.
Once I login(open lid) into my Ubuntu system, Firefox then starts acting up.

So, as you say, we're spending a lot of time trying to reclaim memory with garbage / cycle collection.

Hey mccr8... is the memory report at http://www.mediafire.com/file/2xhd3lqvn33l134/memory-report3.json.gz illuminating at all?
Flags: needinfo?(continuation)
There's certainly something weird going on. There's only one content process, and it has a memory report like this:
2,155.55 MB (100.0%) -- explicit
├──2,095.21 MB (97.20%) ── heap-unclassified
├─────57.53 MB (02.67%) -- heap-overhead
│ ├──34.03 MB (01.58%) ── bookkeeping
│ ├──22.69 MB (01.05%) ── bin-unused
│ └───0.80 MB (00.04%) ── page-cache
└──────2.82 MB (00.13%) ++ (5 tiny)

That's it! The tiny part shows a few ghost windows and some preferences stuff, but little else. I think the memory reporters are fairly async, so maybe the CPU is so bogged down they mostly did not complete. I really doubt there's zero JS.

The parent process is less odd looking but it also has a good amount of heap-unclassified:
  424.49 MB (60.59%) ── heap-unclassified
Flags: needinfo?(continuation)
Whiteboard: [qf:investigate] → [qf:investigate][MemShrink]
This doesn't seem to be memshrink issue (other than a weird memory report).

Im adding another profile - https://perfht.ml/2vungKQ
Apart from the fan spin i see the dreaded spinner yet again.

Usage includes: freecodecamp, reddit, youtube, twitter
Despite this being an unsymbolicated profile (so it's missing details), the pseudostack entries show long CC pauses here again.

Hey bull500, sorry if we've already gone over this, but what add-ons do you have enabled?

Is there anything additional you want me to log/submit? I can do so if its not super hard.

ATM i do have a few enabled; previous profiles were without addons tho
Gecko Profile, Pulse(TestPilot), TestPilot, Video DownloadHelper, VivaldiFox

Another one with all extensions disabled - https://perfht.ml/2vuu4rJ

This one has symbols, so that's good. These big pauses (wow, 5s!!) are GC and CC.

Can you please post your about:support?

Hm. Nothing particularly suspicious there.

Next time this occurs, can you go to about:memory, and click "Minimize memory usage" a few times to see if the behaviour changes?

a real bad hang
none of links even started loading at this stage
https://perfht.ml/2vuOQHR

After the hang
https://perfht.ml/2vuMJ6A

Minimize the memory didnt have any effect
It slowly led to a hang. The UI being responsive but none of the websites were loading content after typing the URL's in fresh new tabs

So it sounds like a leak to me then. Looking at the attached memory report, for example, I see ~500MB of memory associated with detached windows.

This is starting to feel like a pretty serious leak that bull500 can hit reliably. Are we sure this isn't MemShrink-y?

This is real easy to reproduce.
Having freecodecamp.org, twitter, outlook, reddit and youtube opened and closed or left in background can easily trigger.
Freecodecamp does seem like a heavy site similar to CodeAcademy where the performance of Firefox takes a dip; so having one of these coding sites open does the job of reproducing the error without much effort.
Otherwise it takes a tad bit longer to reach this state of problem

My ubuntu system monitor states
Webcontent at 1.8GB-2GB running for about - 06:58:16
Firefox at 490MB-600MB running for about - 07:45:30 (not sure on the runtime accuracy)
There are ton of detached windows and 2 ghost windows (I usually blame addons for that).

Your vsize is rather large, but that's probably because wasm is involved.

So the question is were addons disabled when you took this memory report?

I seem to have managed to get a ghost window on freecodecamp.org (although I'm not seeing wasm). Andrew, is there any chance you could try to repro and do some GC/CC log digging?

Yup my addons were disabled. :erahm

:mconley - ive sent a DM on twitter with a profile link, video and iirc(non anon) memory report.
It might contain personal details so i haven't shared here

I took another profile yesterday - https://perfht.ml/2vHRBGH - Gecko profiler seemed to indicate it had more data on this instance.

I have another doubt if its because of standby/sleep. I leave Firefox running if i shut the lid or the system goes into standby when im away from ubuntu.

What did you do on the site to trigger the ghost window? Did you log in, etc.? I browsed around a little bit on the site and didn't get one.

I believe I attempted to log in with github, realized that was going to be a pain w/ 2FA, cancelled, created a throw-away account and went through a few of the tutorials (up to learning about the <p> tag).

Another bit of info

While i use freecodecamp, i also use codepen for running/testing code.
Not long in the process my browser completely locks up
The CPU usage looked normal but my RAM was maxed out ~96-98% usage of 4GB and ~53% usage of Swap partition (8GB total)

Luckily i was able to crash the session properly via Terminal and here's a crash report if it helps

I'll try to repro again and gather cc logs.

I'm not going to have to time to look at this soon. Sorry for the delay.

I can't seem to repro with the latest nightly.
