One of the outcomes for the onboarding experience is to get people using the web quickly - to simplify the installation flow, remove decisions and information overload and just let people use the browser. Currently, in addition to a first run page, we display a "Private Browsing" page to new users on all OSs except Windows 10 where we display the "Welcome" page. These pages are roadblocks to getting people to the web quickly and as such we'd like them not to be displayed on first run.
Hi Michael-

Per my comment here, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1274627#c3,

It is my understanding that this is not the agreed upon next step.

Thx,
Jen

I think that is a separate issue.

While Private Browsing is a great feature, it's certainly not the main task that most users have in mind when installing Firefox. I'm sure there is a better context for displaying this page. Likewise the Welcome page for Windows 10 users follows a modal dialog with the same CTA as the page. We don't need to bombard new users with a decision that research shows they are not ready to make on the first session.
Hi Jennifer, Chris

The pages that Michael mentioned are unrelated to the 'Almost Done' page which we are keeping for now. Since they are product feature call-outs, I support removing them to streamline the flow to get users into the product. Windows 10 is testing an update on the default browser dialog that obviates the need for the Windows 10 default change (which has little effect on usage) and the private browsing promotion also is related to a feature update that is old. Can we remove them, or is there a plan to test alternates here?

Yeah, he's not talking about the "Almost Done" /firstrun/ page.

I don't have a problem with preventing these additional pages from opening, but I will also needinfo Winston to double check.

I checked the analytics and about half of visitors already have Firefox set as default. Only 5-6% of people on this page attempt and succeed at setting Firefox as default.

The /welcome/ page and /learnmore/ page are not integral for onboarding going forward, can be overwhelming with so many tabs, and were requested by the product team in the past for specific reasons.

To make the /welcome/ and /learnmore/ page not show up, it requires in-product Firefox config changes to not show these URLs.

Windows 10 welcome config:

https://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/app/profile/firefox.js#373

Learn More Private Browsing page config:

Winston:

Are either of these pages playing any critical role with your Firefox durable team?

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/windows-10/welcome/

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/46.0.1/firstrun/learnmore/

They aren't required for any of the onboarding experiments.

Im good with removing both.

Chris/Winston: Can you please indicate the expected timeline (which release / release date) in which these in-product Firefox config changes will be made to not show these URLs?

Moving this over to Firefox :: General since that is the team that will be doing this work.
Component: Tours → General

The Tours component covers firstrun pages too, not just UITour.
