(Keywords: access)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0
Build ID: 20151207030210

Steps to reproduce:

(0) Be on a multi-touch supporting Linux machine running Gnome
(1) Go to accessibility in the settings panel
(2) Enable on screen keyboard
(3) Launch Firefox
(4) Tap on the url-bar
(5) start typing..

Note that this does not happen in the search box on the new tab screen or on the Firefox welcome screen, perhaps because those are draw within a webpage and the url-bar is a ui element

Actual results:

You'll notice that the suggestion drop down menu refreshes after each key press and by doing so take focus away from the keyboard... the up shot is that you have to tap each key twice to get it to register.

Expected results:

The suggestion drop down should not interfere with the keyboard and each key press should be registered.

Same problem here with Firefox 58.0 (64-bit). Using any virtual keyboard makes it lose focus as soon as search suggestions pop up either in the URL input or the search input field.
Problem still persists in 60.0.2.
Duplicate of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=789038?

I would expect the on-screen keyboard to work regardless of the accessibility settings, when using touch.

What I mean is, that this works on other GTK enabled applications, even without the accessibility settings turned on. E.g. tapping the gnome-screen terminal with a touch device brings up the virtual keyboard.
Is this really a duplicate? The keyboard works persé but the problem lies with the automatic suggestions. Everytime I try to type something in the address or search bar, firefox pops up the suggestion popup and if I press another key on my virtual keyboard this keystroke only closes the popup but does not type another character. So I have to press the char twice. This then also happens with the next character you type, rinse repeat.
That's interesting - I'm unable to get the keyboard up at all.

If for example, on this page, I touch the 'add comment' area, I don't get the virtual keyboard pop-up at all. Is this not so for you? I would expect that to be the default behaviour on a touch device, regardless of the accessibility settings (otherwise, how would you input text, say on a linux tablet?)
Ok I just checked some things and I can clarify:

1) If I use the built in on-screen keyboard in cinnamon, it pops up everywhere if things require input (terminal, gtk apps) but *not* in Firefox, be it address-, searchbar or an input field like the one I am writing in now. In this regard I also suffer from the bug that you linked.

2) Furthermore, if you open the keyboard manually or use a different keyboard (I really like Florence) and start typing in the address- or searchbar in Firefox, you get the "double tap" bug I mentioned earlier, where the suggestion popup steals the focus away from the input field and you have to push each letter twice. Once to close the suggestion popup and then a second time to actually write a character. This - I assume - is *not* the same bug as you mentioned but another one. :)
