Details

(Keywords: perf, Whiteboard: [addon: CardBook])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60.0.3112.78 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Specific version: 55.0b2 (64-bit)
I move mouse cursor into the message list section, to the right of the folder listing and top of the preview pane using the Classic View layout with folder pane and message pane enabled. I then use the mouse to scroll up and down the list of messages.

Actual results:

The scrolling is extremely slow and choppy when it does scroll. There is a long lag and when it catches up to the scroll request, it scrolls in a choppy manner. Scrolling through a message itself once selected works just fine.

Expected results:

The scroll should work when I scroll vs a multi second delay. This has recently happened, my best guess is after the upgrade to 55.0b2 (64-bit).
Wayne, you usually add suggestions in cases like this one.

Starting point, does problem go away if you start Thunderbird in safe mode?

If that does not help, is it better going back to the prior version?

Ahh yes, it does go away in safe mode. Sorry for failing to try that first. I will need to start by testing addons I see. Should I mark this as invalid as the issue does not belong to you?
Flags: needinfo?(webbot)
Let's assume it is an addon, and you can comment when you find which one it is.
But if you determine it is not, then it could be a graphic setting - just update the bug with your findings.

Whiteboard: [addon:??]
The problem addon is found. It is "CardBook" (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/). This is unfortunate, I like that one. I have verified this be disabling and re-enabling multiple times. Each time, disabling this addon corrects the issue, and then enabling it brings the issue back.
CardBook is a nice add-on, but it's already known that it doesn't integrate with TB as well as it should :-(
Whiteboard: [addon:??] → [addon: CardBook]
first in CardBook preferences, try to check "CardBook unique source for contacts"

and this does not work, in Thunderbird preferences, Display tab, uncheck the last option : "Show only display name for people in my address book"

cannot reproduce this problem... if someone facing this issue wants to investigate, this is not very complex : all is in the file ovl_formatEmailCorrespondents.js (260 lines of code)

(PS : thanks Jorg)
I've found some optimization for next version ;O)
the new version which is in instance of approbation has some improvments... try it when available...
I will provide feedback and comments on the GitHub page where a parallel conversation is existing rather than here as it seems more appropriate.

RE: https://github.com/CardBook/CardBook/issues/74
I have the exact same problem, but I do not use CardBook. The problem also is not resolved in safe mode.

The version I am using is 60.3.1, on Linux (Arch, Plasma 5, X11 and Wayland).
Same issue here, Ubuntu (Mate) 18.04, even in safe mode.

Simply scrolling the message list takes up to 100% of one CPU core and makes fans blow.

Using Thunderbird is a real pain at this moment.
As it relates to my initial post, the issue is resolved. In order to compare, this is what I am running:
1. Thunderbird 60.2.1
2. Cardbook 33.2 (making note of the "Show only display name for people in my address book" setting in TB Display preferences)
3. Ubuntu Release 18.04.1 LTS
4. Kernel Linux 4.15.0-39-generic x86_64
5. MATE 1.20.1

What worked initially for me until a fix was provided was to uncheck the setting noted in #2.
As I said : Ubuntu 18.04, Thunderbird 60.2.1.

Not using Cardbook, also occurs in safe mode and the setting (which is not related to cardbook) has had no effect.

As the issue is "Message list scroll very slow and choppy", it has not been solved.

Please reopen this bug report.
To clarify on comment 13...

This bug report only covers the case where cardbook IS being used, and so this bug will not be reopened.

If you have a problem and cardbook is NOT being used then this is not the bug for you. Further, if your problem does NOT reproduce when you do Help > restart with add-ons disabled, then please file a new bug report. But you might first install Thunderbird from https://www.thunderbird.net/ to check if the problem is not caused by your distro - if it only happens with the distro build then file a bug with them.

It's OK that there is a misunderstanding - no further comments are needed.

Absolutely, thanks! Without the date column, it's smooth again.
as far as I've understood the Jorg and jc answers :

this bug should be renamed in "Message list scroll very slow and choppy when CardBook is not used"

if you faced this bug when CardBook is used, open a issue here : https://gitlab.com/CardBook/CardBook/issues

No, there is already another bug report (bug 1510325) for that issue. It has to do with the date field.
You need to log in before you can comment on or make changes to this bug.
