Firefox' goal is providing choice for users, but after Google closed Google Reader, we only left Yahoo (for most of the L10n version) on our RSS services choice. (after bug 918375 and bug 906688)

Our community had discussed about this and came out of some new possibly options to adding as RSS handler services, after discussion in mailing list.

* Netvibes
* feedly
* Aol Reader
* InoReader

On bug 918875, :Pike request we contact the services first before adding them to the repo. As my own opinion, have local community contacting international services and ask for the right to do so would be a strange way.

Try think of the situation: More than one Mozilla xx communities reach same service, take Feedly as example, at same time to request the right to add them to different language version of Firefox? It's not only weird but also cause the misunderstanding of Mozilla's procedure to service provider.

Local community can take the responsibility to contact local service (if the service were highly request by local users, that's what our L10n stands for), but for such kinds of services needed by more users across different countries, we should have someone at Mozilla to contact and represent, and do the legal things.
Oops, typo on "bug 918875", should be bug 918375.
Joanne, can you help with this?
I would like to push this again.

:Pike do we still have to contact service provider to get permit for add them to Firefox RSS handlers?

If the answer is yes, then I plan to contact *all* locale owners to discover for every locale needs and ask for permit at once.
Maybe mconnor or kev can help?

I wasn't aware of this bug until this morning.

While waiting for kev/mconnor opinion on this, especially in the new search context, I'd note that we're already shipping some alternatives in other locales, mostly NetVibes and Bloglines.

NetVibes was added to several locales at the time of Firefox 3 (e.g. bug 410523), so I always assumed it was an acceptable option for other locales as well (I might have been wrong in this assumption).

Bloglines seems pretty much dead these days after resurrecting in 2010, and we might have another issue to fix. It was shipping with en-US (removed in bug 595485), so the authorization for locales was sort of implied.

One more note: we generally try to limit options to 3 services, most common is to have 1 or 2 providers set.
Hi, I think as 3 options per locales limit, we can prepare a list of services for locale to choose between.
Not sure if this is still active, but I'll let mconnor and bd keep lead on this, and ask them to coordinate with nchapman if it's still something people want to work on.

Yes I feel this issue should still be deal with, our local user still request more options besides Yahoo.
Joanne, can you give an advice here?

My assumption has always been that we need an authorization to add new search plugins in Firefox, but that doesn't apply to services like Feed Readers or mailto (we're adding a handler to manage that content, and send users to that service).

Hi flod, you are correct, our agreements do not extend outside of search and BD does not need to review these at this time. If you think we should investigate, please let me know and I can talk to the folks on my team about it. Joanne

Thanks for clarifying.

Personally I don't think we need to investigate further, I just wanted to make sure we weren't doing the wrong thing: unlike search engines, where we eventually can measure traffic generated from Firefox, this seems hardly measurable. It's also a feature pretty hidden, and I'm afraid potentially without much future ahead (very few people use RSS).

Not many people use RSS these days, but heavy user demands for it.
For the above comment, I think it's quite ok for community to file a bug add specific RSS service handler to specific locales, do I read it wrong?

You can file a bug (and there's already one for zh-TW), and don't need authorization, so no point in Mozilla asking providers for one (that's why I closed this as WONTFIX).
