It looks to me like on BBC (so possibly others as well?) we are showing Open Sans *Light*, and not *Regular* like we should be. For comparison we *are* displaying the correct weight of sans serif on many other sites: cnn.com, torontoist.com, reddit.com, and news.ycombinator.com, to name a select few.

The BBC site specifically requests font-weight:300, if I remember correctly, and so Open Sans Light is the correct choice. (I'm not sure -why- the BBC's web designers have chosen to specify that, but it's their site -- we're just displaying it in accordance with their styles.)
