Going from an about: page (such as about:support) to a web page (such as SUMO) requires a change to a remote browser.

I vaguely recall there was a problem last time I tried this, but it seems to work and the tests aren't complaining.

Testing completed (on c-c, etc.): not yet, this is a pre-emptive request
Risk to taking this patch (and alternatives if risky): potentially a risk but everything seems to work fine and I think the benefits outweigh the risk

I guess bug 1689469 has the same cause? If so feel free to close bug 1689469 as duplicate.

That works for me with or without this patch. And because there's a separate tab involved, it's not a duplicate of this.
